Today George started to play around with some ideas and concepts for the
album art and digipak. This is a mock-up of George's first idea, which I feel
definitely defines the paranoia/drug related themes of the song, whilst holding
a psychedelic and subtly Gothic aesthetic.
To coincide with the "HAPPY" concept which juxtaposes the
gloom of the music video track and its performance, the art above creates a
contrast between the ideology of being consciously happy, and the illusion of
feeling happy under the influence of narcotics.
When this idea first popped into my head, I imagined the letters
having been literally drawn out with a white powder to look like cocaine, but I
decided to create a mock-up by computer software only to visualise the concept;
to create this, I simply typed "HAPPY" into a black square in Adobe
Fireworks, which I then added a brush effect filter tool to, before using a
spray-can function over the top. I then simply took an image of cocaine lines
from Google, as well as a "damaged film" filter to layer on top.
Finally, I inserted the "Parental Advisory" sticker and made the
bottom left text box, which would act as a sticker above the CD cover.
It may however be more appropriate to create a digipak that mirrors the
styles of similar artists to Donovan, as I researched and presented. Kaitlyn
has also began work on digipak design, and is linking her concepts more closely
to psychedelic influences.
